FROM THE EDITOR
What’s an iconic symbol of Nevada?
When I picture the Silver State, I envision a band of horses running wild
over the dusty plain or professional cowboys giving their all at the Reno
Rodeo. Thus, I think the horse appropriately defines this area.
As much as Reno has developed, it also has stayed the same. Our
community is home to a number of ranches, horse farms, and show arenas.
We have the largest wild-horse population in the country. We have hunters,
jumpers, and cutting-horse enthusiasts. We have mounted police. We have
mule and draft-horse lovers, as well as elegant, pedigreed horse aficionados.
We have a horse (Cholla in Verdi) who paints (visit artistisahorse.com) and
horse whisperers who heal. We have residents who show miniature horses and
save wild horses. We have therapeutic horseback-riding programs for disabled
children. We have endurance competitors (the Tevis Cup) and trail riders.
And we have the 89th annual rodeo (with its world-class buckin’-broncoridin’
cowboys) as well as the 16th annual Reno Rodeo Cattle Drive.
Last year, I was one of the lucky few to participate in the cattle drive
and, over five days, I lived and breathed the Old West. I dressed the part,
splurging on Wranglers and an authentic cowboy hat, and borrowing
chinks for the journey. My trusty mustang, Haus, carried me on the Nevada
landscape by day, and at night in camp I cavorted with the cowboys. I met
a lot of local people on the cattle drive who own horses and/or work on area
ranches. It reminded me of how deeply rooted equine culture is in Reno. I
gained a great respect for this collection of fine people, and I know that many
residents appreciate them, too. That’s why the Reno Rodeo (June 19-28 this
year) always is packed to the rafters.
In addition to paying homage to horses with my cattle drive story (on page
76), in this issue we peek inside three beautiful Reno homes (page 54). As the
weather warms, residents turn their attention to fixing up and entertaining
in their habitats. With spring and renewal being the theme of the season,
we present these stunning houses as inspiration. Also in this issue you’ll find
interesting stories on artistic printmaking, Asian-inspired fashion, camping
with the kids, and ideas on how to get your body ready for summer. Enjoy!
